National Trails Day - "Trail in a Day"

The plan is to build a connecting trail between Mahagony and Poker Chip right above FR242. This will allow trail users to stay off the road when connecting the two trails.

Feb 15, 2017: AMBA Open Board Meeting / Volunteer Event

AMBA Open Board Meeting/Volunteer Event
Date: February 15
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
Where: TREK Superstore on Menaul, 5000 Menaul Boulevard Northeast, Albuquerque
freshments will be served.

AMBA will be having an open board meeting so you can meet the current board members and learn about volunteer opportunities.

We’ll briefly discuss AMBA’s history, accomplishments and our goals for the upcoming year. We’d also like to hear from you to get your ideas and input.

AMBA is your local International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) chapter. A non-profit organization supporting your local trails!

Here are some of the events and support opportunities for 2017...

Adopt a Trail

AMBA and the City of Albuquerque Open Space will be joining forces. AMBA has officially adopted the Ponderosa Loop in the Juan Thomas Open Space and we’ll be working on the trail under direction from the city’s land manager. The map can be found here:

http://www.cabq.gov/parksandrecreation/documents/Juan%20Tomas%20-%20hillshade.pdf

We need volunteers for the following projects and programs. For some of these we need a dedicated team lead to manage the project but for others we just need a few occasional volunteers. We believe these activities will make Albuquerque a better place to ride and live

 AMBA Events for 2017

12 Hours of ABQ / ABQ Mountain Bike Festival
AMBA will do course pre-rides to familiarize folks with the course and help out during the event. We will also be running the beer tent to raise funds for an as yet undetermined project or organization.

Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day (TKMBD)
A fun event to get kids out on bikes

National Trails Day
AMBA will be working on either the US Forest Service (USFS) or ABQ Open Space (AOS) trails.

Fund Raising Event
This will be a social event to raise funds for a mountain bike related project

Programs/Projects

Trail Guides
We have some really great trails but not a whole lot of literature on them. The Chapter is looking into some printed guides or improving some of the online guides that already exist.

AOS Adopt a Trail
AMBA has officially adopted the Ponderosa Loop in the Manzano Mountains and we will be doing some trail work for AOS.

Bike Store Outreach
We are working on increasing AMBA's community exposure and we will be looking at ways to work with the various bike shops to let folks know what we are up to.

Trail Work
We help AOS and the USFS organize trail days.

Advocacy
Meetings with the USFS, AOS and other organizations and trail managers to represent the mountain bike population in Albuquerque.

Electronic Communications
We use the following channels for communication and have several teams working on these.

Kids Program
AMBA would like to develop a kids program. This could be supporting other groups that already have a program or developing our own.

Grant Writing
The local IMBA Chapter has opportunity to apply for various grants to help improve the local riding experience. These include State grants, corporate grants e.g. New Belgium Brewing and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) grants.

Petroglyph National Monument
Members of the board met with the management and staff of the Petroglyph National Monument to discuss the draft development plan for the monument. The plan has several options including a) banning all bikes from the monument or b) using the existing trails to create a 45 mile trail system. The initial comment period is now closed but we’ll be getting an update some time in the summer along with an opportunity to comment on the next draft of the plan. IMBA has also worked with the monument staff to provide input to the plan and will continue to be involved.
